Privacy Policy for “Free AI YouTube Summary & Transcripts”
Last updated: 2025-09-05
Overview
This Chrome extension provides on-page transcripts and optional summaries for YouTube videos, and lets you open AI chat sites with your transcript prefilled. We do not sell, rent, or trade personal data. We designed the extension to run locally with minimal data collection.
Data We Collect and Store Locally
Stored using chrome.storage
on your device:
- Transcript usage counters and period start timestamps for free quota management.
- Paid/unpaid status and, if provided by you, a Gumroad license key (used solely to verify membership).
- Summarizer preferences and consent (e.g., summary type and length).
- A short‑lived text buffer
promptText
used to paste your transcript into AI chat sites after you click “Send to [AI]” (cleared promptly after use).
We do not collect analytics, browsing history, or user identifiers. We do not transmit your transcript content to our servers (we do not operate servers for this product).
Data Flows and Network Requests
- YouTube captions: Captions are fetched directly from YouTube’s own caption endpoints (e.g.,
timedtext
). No third‑party relay is used. - On-device summaries: The optional Chrome on‑device Summarizer (Gemini Nano) runs locally in your browser. If Chrome needs to download a model, that download is handled by Chrome; we do not receive any data from or about this process.
- License verification (optional): If you enter a Gumroad license, the extension calls Gumroad’s Verify API to confirm membership. Only the license key is sent to Gumroad; responses are used locally to set paid status.
- AI chat sites: When you click “Send to [AI],” the extension opens the chosen site (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude) and pastes your transcript into its input field. This happens on your device. We do not intercept or transmit what you do on those sites.
Permissions and Hosts
- Permissions:
storage
(for preferences, quota counters, short‑lived prompt buffer). - Content scripts: YouTube only, to render the panel and fetch captions.
- Web accessible resources: Loader/injector scripts on AI chat sites strictly to paste text after your explicit action.
- Host permissions: Gumroad API only, for optional license verification.
Data Retention
- Quota counters, preferences, and (if provided) license data persist in
chrome.storage
until you remove the extension or clear extension data. - The
promptText
buffer is short‑lived and removed immediately after pasting into the AI site. - We store no server‑side data.
Your Choices and Controls
- You can uninstall the extension at any time.
- You can clear all locally stored data via Chrome’s “Clear browsing data” for site data / hosted app data, or by removing the extension.
- Summarizer model download is controlled by Chrome; we show a consent dialog and remember your choice locally.
Children’s Privacy
This extension is intended for general audiences. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Security
We minimize data collection and keep it local whenever possible. License verification is performed directly with Gumroad over HTTPS. No analytics SDKs are used.
Third Parties
- Gumroad (optional license verification).
- AI chat sites you explicitly open (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude). Your interactions there are governed by those sites’ own policies. The extension does not send them data beyond what’s needed to paste your transcript on your explicit request.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy to reflect product changes or legal requirements. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date above.
